IS IT EASY TO BE YOUNG?
1.INTRODUCTION

As you know everything in Nature has its beginning, development and ending. I mean each creature is born, lives then dies. The humans have young age, middle age and old age correspondingly.

Today we are going to speak about young age, about the youth or teenagers and try to find out if it is easy to be young. I’d like to mention that each age has its beauty and charm, its positive sides. But unfortunately, a medal has two sides. So we’ll have to speak about bad sides of being young too. In another words we are going to speak about ups and downs of the age.

We are a generation of very rapid and complicated life with technological, scientific and social changes. Too many new things and information is appearing every day. We should be in know of everything: cultural, political, economical and

scientific events. It’ not easy for an adult person because demands a lot of time and efforts. For teens it’s much more difficult because they want everything and at the moment. They want to enjoy life, be independent, earn money… .

Can you continue the list of teens’ life ambitions?

2. TEENS’ AMBITIONS:

(they want to…)

  • Enjoy life

  • Be independent

  • Express their individuality

  • Do well at school

  • Earn money

  • Rebel against the society

  • Reject everything

  • Change the world to the best

  • Be taken seriously

  • To have the right to…

2.

But can they (teens) achieve their aim? Is it easy to do all the things they want? Of course, not. What problems do the young face to (meet, have) on their way?

3.TEENS’ PROBLEMS:

  • Family problems -poverty

-misunderstanding

- lack of freedom (curfew)

Now let us see BBC news bulletin about child poverty in eastern Europe and the former countries of the Soviet Union dated by October, 2000.

Child poverty soars in eastern Europe

By Fiona Werge Fifty million children are living in poverty in eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, according to a new report. The study, from the European Children's Trust, says that hunger and poverty in the countries of the former Soviet Union are now at levels approaching those in the developing world. Within the region, the numbers of those living in poverty are more than 12 times what they were 10 years ago. The Trust, an international development organisation, warns that with winter approaching, the situation threatens to reach crisis proportions.Millions below breadline The Trust says more than 168 million people were living below the bread line in 1993 to 1995, the latest available figure.

Children have been hit hard by the crisis
That's an increase from 14 million at the collapse of communism. The Trust believes the situation is now far worse. The proportion of the population living in poverty is as high as 88% in Kyrgyzstan and between 60 and 66% in Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Moldova. Children become 'orphans' The report, called The Silent Crisis, highlights the plight of children. It warns that poverty is driving social breakdown with many families having to leave their children in state orphanages to ward off malnutrition. The Trust says a crisis has been building since the old communist system disappeared.

It claims a sudden relaxation of price controls, coupled with widespread privatisation of industry produced economic meltdown.

The Trust suggests that rather than direct aid, the West should help the expansion of services preventing family breakdown.
3.

Misunderstanding or generation gap has been a problem since the beginning of human story. We can say it’s an eternal problem. It’s so because the young and the old are so different. Here is what W. Shakespeare wrote about it.

A MADRIGAL

(by W. Shakespeare)

Crabbed age and youth cannot live together,

Youth is full of pleasure, age is full of care;

Youth like summer morn; age like winter weather;

Youth like summer brave; age like winter bare;

Youth is full of sport; age’s breath is short;

Youth is hot and bold; age is weak and cold;

Youth is wild and age is tame;

Age, I do abhor thee!

Youth, I do adore thee!

Oh, my Love, my Love is young!

7. LISTENING COMPREHENSION

Listen to the text and for the question below choose the best answer.

Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
Today’s youth

One of the most important factors is that the children of today differ from previous generations, and differ a lot. They grow up quicker – physically and mentally. They sometimes lack knowledge, but they know what they want in this life. They are personalities even at the age of 14-15. Unfortunately some grown-ups don’t understand this and try to show teens “the right way of life”. It’s stupid for children don’t want to listen to them; very often grown-ups loose contact with teens.
