  1. Amelia Earhart was a pioneer of air travel. She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and the first woman to fly solo across the North American continent and back. In 1937, Earhart attempted to fly around the world. Sadly, she disappeared over the Pacific Ocean and was never seen again.

  2. Some people believe that Ferdinand Verbiest built the first steam-powered automobile in around 1672, but it was Swiss inventor Francois Isaac de Rivaz who designed the first internal combustion engine and used it to power a vehicle. In 1885, Karl Benz developed an automobile powered by a gas engine, and he is generally regarded as the inventor of the modern automobile.

  3. Concorde was the more successful of only two supersonic passenger airliners ever to have operated commercially. The plane was first flown in 1969, and Concorde service began in 1 976. On 10 April 2003, British Airways and Air France simultaneously announced that Concorde was to retire, but the plane is still an icon of aviation history.

  4. Hydrogen cars may eventually be produced that can be powered without exhausting energy resources. However, the cars may not be as efficient as today's vehicles. A simpler and more efficient solution may be to develop electric-powered vehicles which will run on batteries. The electricity used to power these vehicles can be obtained through solar, water or wind-gen erated energy.

  5. The TGV is France's high-speed rail service which originally operated between Paris and Lyon in 1981. The service now connects cities across France' and in neighbouring countries. It holds the record for the world's highest average speed for a reg ular passenger service, having reached a speed of 357 miles per hour on 3 April 2007.

  6. Transportation is a major contributor to air pollution in the United States and nearly half of all Americans are breathing unhealthy air. Air quality in dozens of metropolitan areas has become worse over the last decade. In addition, car collisions kill 1.2 million people worldwide each year, and injure about forty times as many.

  7. Man has dreamed of flying since pre-historic times. Many ancient stories involve the idea of flight, including the Greek legend of Icarus and Daedalus. Leonardo da Vinci drew an aircraft in the 15th century, but it was not until the mid-18th century that flight in aircraft became a reality, with Sir Ryan Edward’s invention of a passenger-carrying glider.
